What good narration adds at Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia is a building whose story is invisible without a narrator. It was completed in 537 under the emperor Justinian, designed by Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, and its dome — roughly thirty-one metres across and repeatedly rebuilt after earthquakes — made it the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years. After the Ottoman conquest of 1453 it became an imperial mosque, gaining its minarets and calligraphic roundels; from 1935 it served as a museum, and since 2020 it has been a working mosque again, with a dedicated visitor route for tourists.
Standing inside, almost none of that is labelled. The layers a narrated visit unpacks are physical and easy to miss: the Byzantine mosaics that survive in the galleries, the marble panels bookmatched into symmetrical patterns, the runic graffiti scratched by a Viking guard into a gallery parapet, and the visible seams where church and mosque overlap.
