The story the narration tells

Sultan Ahmed I was a teenager when he ordered the mosque in 1609, and he aimed it directly at the giant across the park: a purpose-built answer to Hagia Sophia, finished in 1617 by Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa, a pupil of the great architect Sinan. The six minarets caused a genuine scandal — only Mecca’s sanctuary had as many — and the interior earned the nickname foreigners gave it: tens of thousands of blue-toned İznik tiles, tulips and carnations winding across them, lit by more than two hundred stained-glass windows.

The narration follows the building the way a visit actually flows — through the arcaded courtyard, under the cascade of domes and semi-domes, into the prayer hall — and tells you what you’re looking at while you’re looking at it: why the tiles bankrupted their kilns, what the calligraphy says, and how a working imperial mosque differs from the museum-monuments around it. You set the pace; pause for photographs, rewind for the details, skip what you’ve already read.

Is there a free Blue Mosque audio guide?

The mosque itself charges nothing — it is an active place of worship, open outside the five daily prayer times, with the usual etiquette (modest dress, shoes off, quiet). It does not, however, hand out an official audio guide. Make it a Sultanahmet morning

You are two minutes’ walk from Hagia Sophia, where the entry ticket already includes an audio guide, and ten from the Basilica Cistern. Do all three before lunch — narrated the whole way. Remember the mosque’s own rhythm: it closes to visitors during the five daily prayers, and modest dress with shoes carried is expected — the narration leaves you time for both.
