What you’ll hear

in 1891 by Osman Hamdi Bey — painter, archaeologist and the man who stopped the empire’s
antiquities from being shipped abroad — and its shelves read like the old world’s
address book: the Kadesh treaty between Egypt and the Hittites, glazed-brick lions from
Babylon’s processional way in the Ancient Orient building, and the Tiled Kiosk itself,
a 1472 Ottoman pavilion older than most of the empire’s famous mosques. Narration is what
turns those rooms from cases of objects into the stories they actually are.
